Concerning people who have just downloaded the updates
I understand that there are a few threads locked, but are about the technical issues after downloading the 300+ files in the recent update for nightfall. The problem is with logging on and seeing the characters in the character selection screen with beginner armor and somethimes having the characters not showing at all.
This thread is a response to "WTF HAPPENED!!?! aaaaaaaaaahh!!" which is currently locked. I've Pmed a mod which was nice enough to unlock it, but I think he forgot to do it, so please if possible, merge the 2 threads.
The GW client has to finish downloading all the new data because there has been a major update for the release of nightfall. Doing this, the client has to re-download all the base files to replace the older ones. The reason why you are seeing the character selection screen as it is, is because you singed in too quickly and have not allowed enough time for the necessary files to be downloaded. The same problem happened to me.
Here’s what you do:
Open the GW client and DON’T sign in. On the top right hand corner of the login screen you can see a yellow lightning icon together with the download meter measuring the downloads in MB. You’ll have to wait for all the file downloads to finish and this may take a while. The total download is about 2GB. Once all of the downloads are finished the lightning icon will disappear and you can now login. If I am correct, all of your characters will be there unharmed and with armor as you left it.
I hope this helps and I hope it helps other who have experienced this problem .
P.s. On a side note, if you do not wait for the streaming updates to finish, they will also predispose you to a laggy game. I've confirmed this with 4 separate computers with separate internet connections. The more completed client which has downloaded all the updates will not download any further updates and will result in a smoother gameplay. However with a more basic client which is still in the process of streaming information, will continue to do so even while you are playing the game. You can confirm if your client is still streaming information by the yellow lightning icon on the top right corner of your screen.
I hope this helps again. Please feel free to post your results and see if this method works for you.

The best way to be sure you are uptodate and no longer receiving streaming updates is to
Right Click on your Icon for GW and click Copy
Right Click on your Desktop and Click Paste
ON the NEW ICon right click and click Rename (name it to GW update or some such)
Then Right Click on the GW Update Icon and click Properties
In the Target box you should see somehthing like
"C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\Gw.exe"
at the end of the line outside of the "" put -image should look like
"C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\Gw.exe" -image
This will update your entire GW program...

thanks for the info, but i've run gw with the -image thing and after that I came with that login with no characters, so i don't think it's an update problem... I could try to reinstall gw, but i don't think it would change anything... i'm really depressed because it seems like i've lost everything
EDIT: confirmed that it's not a problem to download everything from the fact that i don't have the lightning thing

Alot of threads got locked, including mine. I am on a 256K DSL modem and after 2 hours have only managed to download 26.7 MBs. <crappy ISP>
Hence the rationale for my initial question - i dont want to spend the 1st 24 hours of the WPE d/ling files

OK, the reason alot of these threads were closed is that there have been alot of threads started without people reading first, and to be honest it is very annoying when people don't read before they post.
Most if not all of the recent issues have been due to the large download, but it has/should be corrected now.
As for the thread Crush started shouldn't have been closed like that, a bit more information should have been given for the reasons for closing. Your problem is a bit of a strange one, I very much doubt you have "lost everything", and hopefully it has all came back, contacting support is the only thing we can advise when anything account related is asked, you have to remember we are a fansite forum, and have no access to any accounts.
I'll let this thread run for another 24 hours, then it'll be closed as the rest were

they replied with an automatic answer, saying things about stolen accounts.
but there are MANY things that make me think its impossible they robbed my account (for example: why deleting everything without changing password and reselling the account on ebay? and HOW could an hacker delete my warrior without dresses if I were already logged in??)
this doesn't make sense, so I emailed them back.
I LOST EVERYTHING AND DON'T KNOW WHY
PS: they also said that they cannot turn my things back.
